Lets take a look at the ongoing mission projects in our Union.
Churches make quite an effort to start new evangelization programs, e. g. starting and planting new churches. This is part of our mission, and, to God be the glory, we experience results in this field. Every summer tent evangelizations are organized in 10-15 cities around the country, where in some of them there is no Baptist church yet. A new mission has been started among the Roma (Gypsy) community two years ago. A Roma church has been planted and house churches develops in the northeastern part of the country. Roma brothers study and learn how to be an effective lay minister in association with the Mission Comittee and the Theological Seminary of the Union.
The service towards the deaf also became stronger. We feel that we need to share the gospel with people who have physical disabilities, that is why this new mission has been started with the help of Door Europe mission agency. Also, a conference has been organized for this special population.
Summer camps were held mainly for the young generation of our churches. We think that these are excellent opportunities to combine relaxation, recreational activities with the joy of the Spirit-led fellowship.
Different conferences and meetings throughout the year also strengthened our relationship with the Lord and broadened our mission view. Some of these included conferences organized for men, women and youth, meetings for married couples, Willow Creek conference, etc.
The main charity organization of the Union, Hungarian Baptist Aid, continues its succesful ministry towards those in physical and spiritual need around the world. They make an incredible effort to bring relief to the poor, often under dangerous, life-threatening circumstances. Their mission to the homeless and drug addicts makes an important contribution to this population in need which, unfortunately, is still growing in Hungary. HBA started a new program called Adopt-a-Child which helps poor youngsters in Ukraine, Yugoslavia and in other parts of the world. They serve in countries including Malawi, Cambodia, Vietnam, Mongolia, Western-Sahara, Afghanistan, North Korea, etc, in cooperation with Baptist World Aid and other organizations.
As for the foreign missions, we still need to encourage church members to participate in a more active way in this area. However, seeing the difficulties met by Hungarian churches outside Hungary, we appinted pastors to serve in Ukraine and Yugoslavia. Two of our foreign missionaries work in a Operation Mobilization team.
Mission through the media is also a part of our work. We have a number of opportunities to tell the good news on television and radio chanels. The number of Baptists serving in the media is increasing, too.
Hungary will be a part of the EU expansion this May. The political leaders seems to focus only on the economical advances of it, while we believe that we need to consider the spiritual aspects as well. The liberal, sometimes anti-Christian attitude of the EU will challange our churches to make a stronger commitment to our Savior. This is one of the major concerns in our mission, along with other difficulties what we experience in our churches. These mainly comes from the temptation that we should not use the Bible as our only authorative measure in everyday life.
With regard to the cooperation with EBM, it is our joy to have a long relationship with it. We are a member union of EBM, and although we do not have missionaries who work with the organization at the moment, we are happily open to cooperate int he future.
